Liberty Ministries began when an ex-con-turned-outreach-minister felt God calling him to take his house off the market and use it to help people recovering from substance abuse issues. Jed Chappell spent seven years of a 47 year sentence in prison after being shot four times by a police officer during a massive robbery spree. The day he was sentenced he learned of the birth of his first son, and the prospect of never seeing his child broke him to the point where he was able to cry out to God and give his life completely to Christ. Now, many years later, he is the head of one of the largest outreach programs in the state of Oklahoma, a true testament to God's ability to take absolutely anything and use it for His purpose.
The knowledge of Pastor Jed's sobriety house soon spread and one day somebody decided they wanted to donate a small thrift store to Jed's cause, in hopes of raising money to keep the house afloat. Liberty Thrift Store was born, and in the summer of 2011 God called me to run the store. I have a history of drug abuse but had been sober for seven years. During that time I spent a few years running my own publishing company, writing books and writing music, and the absolute last thing I wanted to do was run a thrift store. But God had a plan in mind, and before long God put it on my heart to take over the overall directorship of the ministry.
Now Liberty Thrift Store is in a much larger location and the ministry has expanded to include a clothing ministry. In early 2012 a lady approached and asked me to give away a bag full of brand new clothing. She had purchased these for her daughter the day before they found out her daughter had a very short time to live. From that initial bag of clothing God spawned a desire to give away clothing to everybody in need. Jesus commands us to give to the needy, specifically to feed the hungry and clothe the poor. So we don't have requirements and you don't need to purchase anything--if you need clothes, come on in and fill up a bag, all day every day.
Our goal for the future is to expand even further, but above all else to simply follow God's commands. Wherever God tells us to go we will go, and whatever God tells us to do we will do.
